REPAIRS to a controversial wall in Selkirk will start on Monday.

A dispute between owners of the Glen Hotel and Scottish Borders Council over ownership had led to a lengthy stand off stretching back more than four years.

And since the start of 2013, a temporary one-way system around Yarrow Terrace, Buccleuch Road and Mill Street has been in place.

The Border Telegraph revealed in November that an agreement had finally been reached over footing the £100,000 repair bill.

Work is expected to last around 10 weeks with Yarrow Terrace being closed to all traffic for a fortnight from Monday, January 23.

Councillor Gordon Edgar said: “I am pleased work is finally to begin on the retaining wall on Yarrow Terrace.

“The two-week closure is unfortunately unavoidable due to the nature of the works taking place, but once the repairs have been fully completed Yarrow Terrace will return to a two-way road.

“Once again, can I thank local people for their patience during the negotiations and their co-operation once the works start.”

The current one way system on Buccleuch Road and Mill Street will be suspended during the two-week Yarrow Terrace closure, with parking prohibited on both roads.

However, pedestrian and cyclists will still be able to use Yarrow Terrace and access will be maintained for all residents within the closed section.

Following the road closure, the temporary one-way system will be reinstated until the completion of the wall repairs at the start of April.

Selkirkshire councillor Vicky Davidson is calling for urgent meetings to take place ahead of the changes to the one-way system.

She said: "People's habits have changed. They drive up Mill Street without a care just now, but once the one-way system is lifted there will be cars coming round the corner again.

"I think we need to consider everything carefully and make sure we have appropriate signage in place before we go back to two-way traffic."
