FORGET baking cakes and knitting socks, the ladies of the Selkirkshire WRI are preparing to ditch their dowdy image and pull on their lycra for a battle with TV's Gladiators this week.
The stars of the Sky One series will be visiting Selkirk tomorrow (Thursday) in preparation for the digital switchover which will happen next week.
And the power houses will take time out from their schedule to whip the local ladies into shape as part of a private fitness class.
They will also be putting local school kids through their paces, with pupils from Knowepark Primary set to face the mean machines for a very special keep fit session.
SWRI Selkirkshire Federation rep, Irene Mcfadzen, said: 'We are all really looking forward to it. We"ve had great support from local ladies who are coming along to the class, most of them are in their 50s and 60s!
'The WRI doesn"t have a very good image, and that was part of the reason we wanted to do it. We want to show people that we don"t just sit and knit!'
The ladies will take part in an aerobics class with gladiator Enigma, a trained fitness instructor.
She will be accompanied by fellow gladiator Tornado, a Royal Marine Commando who has served in Afghanistan, Somalia and the Gulf.
Gladiators first hit our screens in October 1992, and this year a revived version of the popular Saturday night show was aired on Sky One.
Throughout its time, the show has regularly pulled in over 14 million viewers on a weekly basis.
The new series of Gladiators will be shown on Sky One from January 2009.
