A FORMER mill in Selkirk could be turned into a fast food restaurant, if local school children get their way.

Primary seven pupils at Knowepark Primary School have written to the town's community council to suggest ideas to improve the town as part of their project on Government and Democracy.

They also suggested building a skate park in Pringle Park and bike track in Bannerfield, as well as launching a campaign to urge more dog owners to clean up after their pets.

In return many of them have volunteered to help with the next litter blitz in the town.

In a letter to the community council's secretary David Bethune presented at its meeting in the Victoria Hall on Monday night, Caleb Gibb said: "My two ideas are to turn the old cloth factory in to a KFC because I think it will make a fortune for Selkirk and build a skatepark in the Pringle Park because young people like to skate."

And he added: "I have one thing I could do to help Selkirk - clean up litter."

Ten-year-old Fraser Wheelans also suggested building an indoor free-running course in Selkirk and fellow pupil Declan Williamson asked the community council for help to attract a sports shop in the town because he claimed many youngsters had to travel outwith the area to buy sports clothes or equipment.

In her letter to the community council, Caitlin Wright said: "My issue is dog poo. There is far too much around Selkirk - it's disgusting, especially when you stand in it which I have done before unfortunately.

"I suggest you put up more signs tellings people to always pick up dog poo and introduce more dog poo bins.

"You could get a group together to go around and spray it to show people just how much there is and hopefully they would then pick up their own dog's poo."

The community council said their secertary, who was not present at their meeting in the Victoria Halls on Monday night, would respond personally to the pupils when they returned from holiday.
