PLANS to commemorate the First World War in Selkirk are being hatched.

Complaints were made over the lack of events to mark the start of the conflict in 1914.

But vice-chair of Selkirk Community Council Graham Easton revealed that talks have started.

He said: “There will be various events happening over the next four years.

“The commemoration of the outbreak of the war has been low-key - there was a church service where the names of the dead were read out - but more will happen over the next four years.

“It has been suggested that we look into creating a permanent memorial garden and that is something we are looking into.” Amateur historian Dougie Purves renewed calls for names of the fallen on the town’s War memorial to be restored and highlighted.

Mr Purves said: “This has been talked about for a number of years and it should be done.”
