Jennifer Thomson, aged 69 and from Earlston, was behind the wheel of a Seat Ibiza when she was involved in a collision with a Nissan Qashqai coming in the opposite direction on the A7, just south of Selkirk, on Thursday around 4.55pm.

Despite efforts from all of the emergency services she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her family issued this statement through Police Scotland: "Jennifer, although having been retired from teaching for several years, still played an active role in community affairs. She continued with supply work, the Red Cross and provided make-up for several border operatic societies. She will be sadly missed by family and friends."

The 51-year-old female driver of the Nissan was taken to Borders General Hospital for treatment. However, her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Police closed the road for five-and-a-half hours to allow for the recovery of the vehicles and carry out a full investigation into the causes of the crash.

And officers are now urging anyone who can assist with their ongoing enquiry to come forward.

Inspector Andrew Amour said: "Sadly, this incident has resulted in the death of one of the drivers and we are currently working to establish the full circumstances around the collision.

"I would appeal to anyone who may have been in the area at the material time and may have witnessed what happened to come forward.

"Similarly, if anyone has information relevant to this investigation then they are also asked to contact police immediately."
