FIFTY-EIGHT walkers from all over the region took to the border hills on Sunday to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

And, despite being blessed with fantastic weather for the most part, managed to see all four seasons in one day!

The 20 mile sponsored walk, from Dryhope to Selkirk, started in 1989 and has been held annually ever since, with the exception of 2001 due to the foot and mouth epidemic, and has raised in excess of £140,000 to date. The scenic route which follows the Southern Upland Way for the most part is not for the feint hearted, particularly the hard climb out of Traquair.

However the walkers, fortified by a cup of soup and a Mars bar, courtesy of the Co-op, take it all in their stride with many returning every year to support this worthy cause.

First Bus have also supported the walk for many years by providing transport to take the walkers to the starting point in the Yarrow Valley. Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Team also continue to support the walk every year and their reassuring presence is always appreciated but there were no casualties.”
