AT the turn of the year, doctors delivered heartbreaking news to Leighanne Sanderson. Her brain tumour meant she had only weeks to live.

But today the 38-year-old, who is a proud mum to 15-year-old son Kieran, will fly to Germany to receive revolutionary treatment that could turn her fortunes around.

Thanks to the generous supporters who have raised almost £90,000, she can begin specialist treatment, which is not available on the NHS, at Hallwang Private Oncology Centre in Dornstetten.

There is a slim chance the treatment, which has worked on other patients, could cure her, but it is hoped it will at least prolong her life.

Leighanne’s sister Katie has been left stunned by people’s generosity.

“It’s overwhelming. I would not be able to take Leighanne to Germany without these donations, so thank you to everyone,” said Katie.

“We could’ve done nothing, but I know I can say I have given 100 per cent. This is the last chance we’ve got.”

Leighanne, from Renfrew, was diagnosed with cancer at the beginning of 2017, when doctors said she had between 18 months and five years left.

But five months ago, she was told treatment she had received at the Beatson in Glasgow, aimed at reducing the tumour, had not worked, and was given a prognosis of two to four months.

For a while, the family thought they may have to face the fact Leighanne wouldn’t have long left because other available treatments could have made her feel worse despite prolonging her life.

But then Katie discovered the clinic that prides itself on groundbreaking medicine. She said it was great news, but raising £90,000 seemed an impossible task.

Katie added: “For a while it didn’t look like we were going to get near the £90,000.

“I don’t have the money to get us back yet but I will worry about that once we are there.

“I don’t think it is going to sink in until I’ve got her on the plane. We hope it is going to prolong her life. If it cures her it will be amazing, but there’s no guarantee.”

It is not known when the treatment will begin due to Leighanne’s frailty but it is expected to take around a week once it starts.

Katie still needs funds so they can return home. To donate see: www.justgiving.com/kathleen-sanderson
