CONVENTION sometimes dictates that at school only the most academic students will be celebrated, but why need that be the case?
At Galashiels Academy, the celebration of a wider variety of achievements and skills has been brought into focus recently, and this most recent event is set to showcase the services and activities that members of the school and wider community find truly valuable.
This latest award ceremony was held on Wednesday, March 30, and was a chance for members of the community to have their say in the patting of the backs of successful pupils.
Pupils, parents and teachers were given the power to nominate those whom they believed deserved an award, a move which will hopefully bring the hidden endeavours of pupils to light.
These activities and attributes are often never seen by the majority of people, and this chance to celebrate them is just a part of the Academy's overall aim to congratulate pupils for all things deserving of commendation, from volunteering to the demonstration of fantastic personal traits.
Keynote speaker was former pupil Ruth Sandison whose own determination to beat leukaemia and get on with her life made her someone who truly embodied the virtues we were celebrating.
Recipient of the Parent Council Personal Achievement Award this year was our Head Boy, Gregor Purves.
This is only one of three award ceremonies which take place throughout the year at the Academy, part of a school-wide attempt to celebrate all the aspects of success in young learners and citizens.
