Sir, On reading last week’s newspaper, I could not believe my eyes when I spotted the District News for Earlston.

The article headed “Old Cauldie” is no more local news submitted by and for local people than pie in the sky! Who are Scottish Borders Council trying to kid now?

I don’t know who or why it was decided to publish the narrative in this section but readers should be not be fooled: the article is extracted from a document on Scottish Borders Council’s website, having been published by them on 16 May 2014. Does this Council never learn from its failures? We are on the receiving end of another public relations error of judgement, witnessing SBC continue to attempt to blame “a determined campaign by a group of objectors” rather than accepting responsibility for the organisation’s own incompetence in not checking the land portfolio, making secret leasing deals behind the community’s back and, most importantly, ignoring the people’s wishes.

In the final paragraph we learn that once again, SBC appear to have decided for some unfathomable reason that Earlston Community Development Trust is a “special” group, deserving of their support but, once again, without any mention of community consulation and involvement. We, the tax payer, must ask why have they been singled out from all other local groups to be given this level of assistance and support?

Councillor Parker’s statement on the Yes Campaign is perhaps the final insult to Earlston: “Like any other citizen I have the right to express my opinion”. In recent months he has taken every opportunity in the media to insult those Earlston constituents who have attempted to exercise the exact same right.

I am, etc.
