HERIOT’S Thomas Otton claimed silver in the final leg of this year’s Scottish Junior Hill Running League at Aberfoyle on Sunday.

The gruelling Under 17s and Under 20s races doubled up as the Scottish trial races for the Junior Home International, due to be held in Betws-y-Coed on September 19.

Otton, who runs for Gala Harriers, finished just over a minute behind East Sutherland’s Ross Gollan in the 7km Over 20s race.

Former Harruier, Gavin Bryson, finished third with Lucas Cheskin from the Peebles-based Moorfoots in fourth.

After her excellent PB on the track over 1500m at the Scottish Championships last weekend Mairi Wallace from the Moorfoots club put in another really strong performance to come third in the Under 17 girls race behind two of Scotland’s top cross-country runners Laura Stark and Emily Nicholson.

On top of her bronze medal in the Scottish Championships back in May, Mairi has put herself in contention for a spot in the Scotland U17 team for the Home International.

In the Under 15 league races which were run over the same 3.8km course as the U17 girls, Beth Hobbs from Peebles showed a return to form with her fourth place in 21.41 and Ethan Elder was sixth in a hot and closely contested boys’ race in 19.43.

In the Boys’ Under 17s race James Logan from Gala Harriers finished seventh with team-mate Lewis Bell back in tenth.

The Scotland team’s for the Home International will be announced this week.
