DENHOLM have been crowned primary school netball champions of the Borders.

The final of the annual Primary Netball Cup took place last Wednesday at the Queens Leisure Centre in Galashiels.

Organised by Borders Sport and Leisure, the final brings together all of the regional winners and runners-up from across the Borders.

Split into two pools the teams play each other with cross-over ties to determine the two finalists.

Competing this year were teams from St Ronan’s, Melrose, Langlee, Knowepark and Kingsland Primaries in Pool A while Trinity, Chirnside, St Boswells, Broomlands and Denholm Primaries made up Pool B.

Kingsland won Pool A with St Ronan’s finishing runners up.

Denholm topped Pool B from Trinty Primary.

Following cross-ties it was Denholm who edged a thrilling final with Kingsland by six goals to five.

Gemma Ross from Borders Sport and Leisure told the Border Telegraph: “This was one of the closest and most exciting finals we’ve had.

"End to end play, with nothing in it between the two teams.

Both teams played their hearts out to the bitter end.

"The lead changed throughout the two 5-minute halves but Denholm just pipped Kingsland to the post when the whistle went with a final score of 6-5.”

The initial competition was open to P6/7 Primary School netball teams throughout the Scottish Borders with the area winners participating in final.

Ewan Jackson, Chief Executive of Borders Sport and Leisure, added: “All of the teams gave a fantastic display of skills and teamwork throughout the morning. The close and hard fought games made for a hugely exciting competition.

"Our thanks go to go to all school staff, PE teachers and parents who helped to prepare the pupils for the competition as well as to all of those who assisted with umpiring throughout the morning."
