PUPILS from the Borders reached the podium last week at the Scottish Schools Indoor Championships.

Berwickshire High’s Rosie Brown continued her fine form in the pole vault to take gold.

The teenager cleared 2.50 metres for the Under 16s title at the Emirates Arena.

Selkirk’s Henry Clarkson, who competes for Merchiston Castle, produced a sensational half metre personal best to claim silver in the Over 16s long jump. The 16-year-old’s jump of 6.84 metres takes him to second in the Scottish Under 20s rankings.

And it took a championship record of 7.09 metres from Alessandro Schenini to beat him.

Peebles High’s Bryony Paterson, who trains with Clarkson at the Linda Nicholson jumps school, also returned with a medal. The 15-year-old reached a new best distance of 5.29 metres to claim bronze in the Over 16s long jump.

The Innerleithen athlete also qualified for the semi finals of the 60 metres but was forced to withdraw with an injury.

Fellow Peebles pupil Ellie O’Hara finished third in the final of the 60 metres hurdles, despite being the youngest in the field. The 13-year-old clocked a new personal best of 9.66 seconds to become the championships’ youngest medalist. Ellie also finished seventh in the Under 16s long jump with a distance of 4.91 metres.

Coach Nicholson told us: “I am really pleased with the results, which are incredible given that we have no indoor training facilities and have had to suffer relentless wind, rain and ice whilst trying to undertake quality training.”

And Earlston's Laura Munro also collected a bronze by finishing third in the final of the Under 16s 60 metres.

Several other Borders athletes reached the finals after qualification from heats and cross-ties.

Cameron Caldwell from Galashiels Academy was sixth in the Over 16s 200 metres while Earlston High’s Gavin Bryson crossed the line in eighth in the Over 16s 1500 metres.

Leah Keisler from Biggar High School was fourth in the Under 16s long jump. Ailsa Innes from Peebles High was seventh in the final of the Over 16s 800 metres while Cameron Clamp was sixth in the final of the Over 16s 400 metres.

Kobe Stevens from Peebles High finished seventh in the Over 16s 800 metres final.
