Selkirk 1

BSC Glasgow 2

AS sucker punches go, this one was a belter.

Selkirk had spent much of the previous 90 minutes banging on the BSC Glasgow door only to concede a controversial goal in the dying seconds.

With player-manager Garry O’Connor sidelined through injury the lack of a natural goalscorer haunted the home team throughout the match.

Player-coach David Robertson admitted it was a game of missed opportunities. He said: “If we take half of our chances we win the game, it’s as simple as that.

“I don’t like criticising referees but we were flagged for offside all afternoon when we were through on goal yet their winner looked a yard offside to everyone in the ground - the officials let it go and they score the winner.

“But we shouldn’t be blaming the referee today – we had more than enough chances to finish this game off long before they scored.”

It had all started brightly enough with Bayan Fenwick running onto Phil Addison’s flick on to drill a low shot into the far corner of the net after 10 minutes.

An Addison effort two minutes later was cleared from in front of goal.

Broomhill grew into the game with Arnault Bembo commanding the midfield area.

Although the visitors did enjoy a lengthy spell of possession and territory during the first half Jamie Newman rarely had a save to make.

Selkirk almost doubled their advantage on 35 minutes as Moore parried a Fenwick shot against Robertson but the ball bobbled round the wrong side of the post.

The Glasgow side almost grabbed an equaliser on the stroke of half time but Newman was alert enough to push Mark Dryden’s in-swinging corner to safety.

It was the home side who were dominant in the early stages of the second half with a Fenwick effort being blocked in front of goal on 47 minutes after some eye-catching creativity from Addison.

Four minutes later the Selkirk strikers teamed up again only to be denied by another good block from Stephen Bronsky.

On 55 minutes Addison weaved past two tackles to delicately dink the ball towards the far corner of the net, only for Moore to finger-tip the effort round the post.

But the home team were becoming frustrated as time after time they were caught offside.

And just after the hour the unthinkable happened. Towering Garry Kenneth, who had been in great form yet again for the Souters, slipped as he brought the ball out of defence and allowed Robert Jones to run in on goal and equalise.

In response, Fraser Neave, Addison and Fenwick all forced good saves from Moore.

With 10 minutes remaining substitute Kerr Scott raced clear of the defence to collect an Addison through ball but he could only shoot against the keeper’s legs.

The pressure continued on the BSC goal with Robertson heading into the side-netting and Addison having two efforts blocked.

With the clock entering the third minute of added time, BSC broke from their own half with a long ball over the top to Jones. Despite appeals from around the pitch and around the ground, the assistant didn’t raise his flag and the striker squared for Aiden Ferris to strike from the edge of the area.

Robertson was quick to defend his former Dundee United team-mate, Kenneth, at the final whistle. He added: “It was a hard one to take.

“Big Garry has been excellent since he came here and that was a rare mistake.”
