THE Kings of the Sevens series rolls on to the penultimate tournament at Philiphaugh on Saturday where no less than five of the competing teams have already won a tournament.

With the draw seeded, Melrose, Jed-Forest, Watsonians and home club Selkirk in each quarter, there looks like some exciting match ups throughout the day.

Selkirk director of rugby John Rutherford is hoping for a home victory. He told us: "It would be great if Selkirk could win but there are some good teams in the draw.

"We have a really good coach in Graham Marshall and, although we're not the biggest side, we have plenty pace. On our day we are a match for anyone, like we showed at Peebles, and Selkirk teams always lift their game for their own sevens.

"This is a huge day for Selkirk - like other Borders clubs it provides the finances to keep us going - and it would be great to see a lot of people down to support us."

After eight tournaments Jed-Forest head up the Kings of the Sevens table.

And the race is one, with Watsonians in pole position, for the highest-placed non-Borders side to lift the new Macari's Cafe Cup.

Owner of the Galashiels cafe, Phil Macari, handed over the new trophy to Border League secretary Norman Anderson at Sunday's Earlston Sevens.

But it is the main Kings title which could be won at Philiphaugh if Jed can earn four more points than Watsonians.

The Young twins were outstanding in Jed's tournament win at Earlston on Sunday.

However, in the other half of the draw Melrose were in terrific form last weekend winning the Kelso tournament and scoring over 100 points in their semi-final and final wins against Watsonians and Gala, respectively.

There are a few guest teams who will be very competitive but the great unknown in the tournament are Loughborough, who were very impressive last year and have a great history in the abbreviated game.

They are coached by former Selkirk player Ciaran Beattie who will be keen to make an impression at his old club.

Whether the Kings of the Sevens will be won or not, Rutherford does think the Selkirk tournament winner will come from one of the four seeded sides - Melrose, Jed, Watsonians and Selkirk. He added: "It is a nicely balanced draw.

"Melrose showed on Saturday that they are still a class act, and Jed and Watsonians both looked really good at Earlston.

"I think the winner will come from the seeded teams but I have been wrong before."

The tournament, which starts at 2pm, is again sponsored by Lawrie’s Garage, St Boswells and the cup by CPE Consultancy.

And there will be an after-Sevens party held in the clubrooms.

Full draw: Melrose V Peebles, Gala V Edinburgh Acads, Selkirk V Biggar, Kelso V Stewarts Melville, Watsonians V Falkirk, Loughborough V Langholm, Jed-Forest V Hamilton & Hawick V Berwick.
