GALA Fairydean Rovers have extended their award-winning community engagement programme by officially taking over the running of the Borders Disability Football Squad.

The team was set up two years ago by Alan Oliver, Sport Development Officer at Border Sport and Leisure Trust.

Alan officially handed over the running of the squad to Gala Fairydean Rovers last week. The Netherdale club have appointed Terry Patterson as head coach and he will be assisted by his son Tommy and Callum Malone.

The squad which contains players from across the Borders will now officially become a part of the Netherdale club joining the successful Walking Football team and Junior, Youth and Girls sections.

The team are currently sitting top of the National Division 2 League table after a fantastic season so far.

Head Coach Terry told us: “I am delighted to be involved with coaching such a great group of players.

"I am also extremely grateful for all the hard-work undertaken by Alan Oliver in establishing and nurturing the squad.

"I only agreed to do take the reigns if the team received the same kind of kit, tracksuits and training gear as the other sides under the GFR umbrella. "Luckily, chairman Kevin Temple, secretary Graeme McIver and the committee of Gala Fairydean Rovers sing from the same hymn sheet as myself and the Disability Football Squad will be fully integrated into the main club."

The team train on a Thursday night at Netherdale between 6pm and 7pm.

The team are always looking for new players. Anyone interested should attend the training sessions or contact Terry on 07738 615 562.
