LAUGHTER and merriment was the order of the day at the Mini Maroons annual dinner recently, as this year's crop prepares for the step up to Galashiels Academy.

The Mini Maroons are Gala RFC’s mini level rugby club, which aims to introduce Primary 3 to 7 age boys and girls to rugby in a fun and friendly environment.

“Absolutely brilliant, best one yet!” is how Gala Rugby club manager Ian Millar described the occasion at Netherdale earlier this month.

“That is the 11th one I have done, and it was just a great atmosphere. The whole place was buzzing.”

The young hopefuls took their chance to put captain Chris Weir, vice captain Alan Emond and this season's top try scorer Graham Speirs on the spot. Questions ranged from nutrition, changes in the game since that trio made their debuts and what it means for a young player to come through the ranks to represent Gala.

Graham Speirs said he couldn't see himself playing for any other side apart from Gala, but when the trio were forced to pick any other side other than the Maroons the verdict was unanimous – Scotland.

Ian said: “There were plenty of light-hearted questions and banter but you could see that when the the topics were a wee bit more serious the young lads were taking it on board. It was great to have players of the calibre of Chris, Alan and Graham there.

“Mark Moncrieff is the Minis convenor and was compere for the evening and he knows a thing or two about rugby as well. Added to that, you have coaches like Ian Corcoran and Alan Johnston this year, there is such a depth of experience for these young lads to tap into.”

The School of Rugby link up with Galashiels Academy that was announced last May is already reaping benefits.

“We are seeing double the numbers at S1 level taking part in rugby this year up at the school, which is great." said Ian.

"Coaches have their part to play, of course they do. But the school has been first class and there are a good group of parents who are very supportive, always willing to do things and help out in any way they can. It has been a genuine group effort across the board.”
