THE heavy rain forecast failed to materialise at Grangemouth on Saturday for match two of this season’s Forth Valley League but Team Borders created their own storm in the arena, surging to eight wins on the track and six in the field.

Sitting second in the league after match 1, Saturday’s tremendous collective team effort saw Team Borders finish 42 event points ahead of Dunfermline who had just edged it marginally in the opening round.

Both teams now sit joint top of the league with 15 match points, but with Team Borders having the superior event points total.

The league title will now boil down to which of the two comes out on top in the third and final match on June 25.

Angus Bryce (TLJT) and Michael Girdler (Moorfoot) kicked the afternoon off with an A and B sprint double in the U15 Boys 200m, breaking the tape for their respective race wins in the exact same time of 24.7s.

The boys also combined later in the day with the Chirnside pair of Josh Abbott and Ben Evans to streak home in the 4x100m relay.

And that sprint double and relay win was repeated in the U11 Boys age-group through Gala flier Sam McAneny who won the A 200m in a blistering 28.6s and TLJT’s Matthew Beaton in the B race (30.9s), along with Kyle Taylor (Chirnside) and Jake Lockyer (Moorfoot) in the relay.

In the field events, Chirnside’s Harris Ross, who was making his Team Borders debut, and still has another year in the U11 age-group, took the win in the A shot putt with a throw of 5.81m and clubmate Kyle Taylor made it a third event double for Team Borders by taking the B win with 5.40m.

Top scorer for the team on the day was Chirnside’s Hannah Hamilton Meikle who competed in three A events, taking the win in the U13 long jump with 4.00m and second places in the javelin (17.29m ) and 1500m (5m 34.4s), demonstrating significant multi-events potential.
