FORMER Airdrie midfielder Darren Smith admits he couldn’t turn down the offer of coming to Gala Fairydean Rovers.

The 29-year-old, who also enjoyed a season at Berwick Rangers, has agreed a one-year deal with the Netherdale club.

Part of the draw to the Lowland League side was teaming up again with his former team-mate Stuart Noble.

Darren told us: “I was at Airdrie with Stuart before he went to Alloa and used to share a room with him when we stayed in hotels.

“He was a good lad and we’ve remained friends. I’m looking forward to being back in the same team as Stuart as I know what a good player he is.”

Smith was part of last season’s Lothian Thistle team who reached the fourth round of the Scottish Cup.

But the midfielder, who began his career at Hibernian, was tempted by the prospect of Lowland League football.

He added: “Gala have ambitions to push up the Lowland League this season and I want to be part of something like that.

“I know how good the Lowland League is and I’m excited about playing against some of the top teams.

“I have been impressed by manager Steven Noble and the facilities down here… I really can’t wait to get started and show what I can do.”

Fairydean Rovers manager Steven Noble is thrilled to have captured Smith’s signature.

He told us: “We have been after Darren for a while.

“He is a quality player and he also has the experience of a higher level which is something we need.”
