INNERLEITHEN'S Bryony Patterson has to miss her town's St Ronan's celebrations at the weekend after earning a Scotland call-up.

The 16-year-old, who competes for Lasswade, was competing in Ashford for the Scottish Schools team.

And she finished a highly creditable fifth with a distance of 10.60 metres - just 17 centimetres short of her best which she achieved in the national schools championships last month.

Bryony's training partner, Faye Nicholson, was this year's Standard bearer's Lass at the St Ronan's Festival.

Coach Linda Nicholson told us: "Bryony's excitement at competing for Scotland was tempered by disappointment at missing Faye's installation as Standard Bearer's Lass.

"Bryony flew the flag for Scotland but also took her Standard Bearer and Standard Bearer's Lass' flash for good luck."

England's Adelaide Omitowoju was the winner of the Under 17s triple jump.

Berwickshire's Rosie Brown, who used to compete for Gala Harriers, finished eighth in the Under 17s pole vault.

And Chirnside's Alexandra Vallance also finished eighth at the Kent arena in the Under 17s javelin.
