PEEBLES cyclists Grant Ferguson will climb into the saddle on Sunday in a bid to emulate his Team GB mates.

The 22-year-old, who was a late inclusion in the British cycling team for Rio, will compete in the mountain bike cross-country race.

Although Grant isn't considered to be amongst the pre-race favourites, the form of his fellow Team GB cyclists could boost the former Peebles High pupil's chances.

Ferguson has watched his British cycling team-mates claim a dozen medals so far.

And there could well be another gold or silver to add to the tally when former world champion Liam Phillips takes part in the BMX finals throughout Friday.

Grant, who enjoyed a highly successful 2015 in which he won silver at the U23 European Mountain Bike Cross Country Championships before taking his first ever win at the World Cup in Italy, can't wait to get his wheels in motion.

He said: “I’m thrilled to have been selected to represent Great Britain.

"I can’t wait to get out there.”

Team GB have won no fewer than 11 track medals in the Rio velodrome with golden couple Laura Trott and Jason Kenny both claiming double victories.

Several other riders, such as Katy Marchant and fellow Scot Callum Skinner, have exceeded expectations by also reaching the podium.

Grant's cross-country race takes place from 4.30pm on Sunday.
