FOUR Borderers will be hoping to emulate the success of our Olympic athletes as the Paralympic games get under way today.

Patrick Wilson of Peebles, Samantha Kinghorn of Gordon and Libby and Stephen Clegg, both of Newcastleton, will all be looking to create sporting history in their bids to win gold.

The region has already enjoyed huge success in Brazil this year with Melrose’s Mark Robertson taking silver in the first rugby sevens event and Dan Wallace of Duns winning silver in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay.

Not only that, but Chris O’Hare from West Linton did the region proud by finishing 10th in the semi-finals in the men’s 1500m and Grant Ferguson from Peebles ranking 17th in the men’s cross country mountain biking.

And now the Borders will represented in boccia, athletics and swimming events in the Paralympics.

Wilson will be flying the flag in the boccia event, while wheelchair racer Kinghorn will be making her Paralympic debut.

Sprinter Clegg will also be taking part in the athletics, after competing in Beijing 2008 and London 2012.

And Stephen Clegg will compete in the swimming.

The boccia events will run from Saturday, September 10 to Friday, September 16.

The athletics and swimming events will start tomorrow.
