Gala A 62

Selkirk A 0

Joe Dickson at Netherdale

GALA A entertained neighbours Selkirk A at Netherdale on Saturday lunchtime in the Border 2nd XV Cup.

And unfortunately the gulf between the National 1 and 2 showed, especially in the second half.

Gala took play into the Selkirk 22 from the kick off and after several close calls a pick up by Cameron Pate sent Fraser Welsh in at the corner for the opening try.

A good break by prop Terry Skeet fed Gregor Mein to put Welsh in for his second try.

Simon Fairburn’s conversion from the touchline rebounded off the post.

Selkirk matched Gala for a spell and provided an entertaining game for the spectators.

But Gala eventually got back to scoring ways with Mein going over for the third try converted by Simon Fairburn.

The break came with Gala ahead 17-0.

Gala rang the changes from the start of second half and soon added to the try tally when a tap penalty sent Terry Skeet over for an unconverted try.

Almost straight away a break up the touchline by Rex Jeffrey sent sub Andrew Mitchell racing from halfway for a try at the posts.

Fairburn converted to stretch the advantage.

Gala were turning the screws now and Mein went in for his second try - again converted by Fairburn.

Selkirk were wilting as the pressure continued.

Gala threw the ball about and in the next few minutes Welsh got his hat trick before then Richard Tod raced away for a solo try.

Both tries were converted by Fairburn.

Rex Jeffrey was next on the scoreboard with an unconverted try after good passing down the right wing.

The final try also went to Jeffrey after an intrusion by Aidan Turner from full back made the overlap.

Fairburn’s conversion heralded the final whistle.

Welsh’s three tries, which could easily been several more as he was involved in a load of moves, earned him man-of-the- match.
