EARLSTON High progressed to the final of the Scottish Schools Plate competition at the weekend.

Although the winter weather is upon us, Earlston High/Melrose Rugby have been very fortunate not to lose a game to the colder conditions.

In the last three weeks, the younger squads have pulled off handsome victories against Jedburgh GS at S1, S2, S3 and U16 age groups scoring 40 tries in the process and conceding only five.

This was followed up with three more wins versus Boroughmuir rugby on the road at Meggetland.

S1 scored 10 tries in their match, the S2 hit 80 points and the S3 enjoyed a tighter affair, with a 24-19 victory on the senior pitch. A chilly morning greeted the players as they hosted Peebles HS at the weekend, but three excellent matches were played and it was pleasing to see three close affairs. At S1, with 3 periods played the score was close at 9-6 and it was only in the last quarter that the Wasps pulled away to a 21-6 win.

Peebles HS gained revenge with a narrow 22-20 win in an excellent display of running rugby from both XVs. At S3 level there was again flowing rugby on display and although Peebles HS took an early 12-0 advantage, the Wasps ran out 24-12 winners mainly due to their composure on the ball when under pressure.

The performance of the month was reserved for the Under 16 squad who progressed to the final of the Scottish Schools Plate competition with a hard fought 29-22 win versus Robert Gordons College of Aberdeen.

A physical visiting pack had the Borderers under pressure, but stronger handling skills and a resolute defence were the ingredients for a fine semi final win. The U16 play The High School of Glasgow in the final at Murrayfield on December 7.
