ANY age group rugby in December is a bonus with the threat of frosty pitches, but the Earlston High Melrose Rugby Wasps enjoyed a first class outing in perfect winter conditions versus Currie RFC, one of the strongest youth set ups in the country.

Unfortunately, the S1 and the S2 matches proved to be one sided affairs.

At S1, the Wasps powered to a 15 try victory, with much improved ruck and maul providing excellent possession for the free running backs.

Currie exacted revenge with a 10 try defeat of the Borders visitors. The Currie S2 have not been beaten in two years and the Borders XV never threatened this record, with weak tackling not helping their cause. In the deciding rubber, it was the Wasps S3 who had the more clinical attacking edge to seal a 22-0 victory over a dangerous Edinburgh XV.

The Wasps U16 squad travel to Murrayfield on Wednesday to take part in the biggest Schools Cup final day ever seen in Scottish Schools history. Six finals will take place over the course of the day, with the Wasps U16 one of only two state schools (alongside Bell Baxters of Cupar) to reach the finals and a fixture versus The High School of Glasgow.

The day concludes with the U18 final where Dollar Academy take on old rivals Stewarts Melville College.
