THE Borders Netball league experienced some turbulence on Sunday as Gala Tempest swept in to face Peebles Storm.

With Storm sitting one place above Tempest in the league it was all to play for as the two teams duelled at Peebles High School.

The first quarter saw the two teams evenly-matched in terms of possession and goals, with Tempest leading 6-4 going into the second quarter. However, the second quarter proved to be a whirlwind for the Gala team as their defence Sandra Hendry, Caris Brus and Anne McKechnie worked hard to keep their opponent’s ball out of the shooting circle. Meanwhile, Tempest shooters Karen Gillie and Sophie Birtwistle, helped by wing attack Gwen Bradley and centre Lauren Thompson, increased the deficit by netting a further 11 goals while Storm battled against the defence to score only one goal.

Going into the third quarter, Lindsey Pate stepped in as wing defence, with Sophie Wilson coming on to shoot. Storm blew away some of the Gala team’s advantage, netting six goals to Tempest’s four, with the score sitting at 21-11 to Tempest going into the final quarter. Tempest whipped up some incredible play in the last quarter with some superb interceptions, great defending and a volley of goals from Sophie Wilson which netted her the “Fair Play” award, nominated by their opponents.

The final score was 29-14 to Tempest.
