Students prove too strong in Glasgow

Glasgow University 5

Fjordhus Reivers 1s 1

FJORDHUS Reivers 1s started the second half of the season with a rearranged match against Glasgow University.

The game started at a ferocious pace with both teams showing great determination.

Glasgow University took the lead after a fast break by their strikers, allowing them to grab the first goal of the match.

Reivers fought on and soon afterwards a great ball from Maris Cawthorn down the line to Chloe Richardson past the majority of the opposition allowed Chloe to weave her way through the few remaining Glasgow defence giving off a pass to back post which was finished off by Gwen Morton-Lloyd.

Another two quick breaks by the Glasgow team ended the first half with the Fjordhus girls trailing by 3 goals to 1.

Despite this, Fjordhus Reivers fought on but couldn't quite finish off the opportunities created due to a strong defensive unit.

Glasgow Uni had the chance to increase their lead through a penalty stoke, but much to the relief of the Fjordhus squad it went wide of the post. However, soon afterwards, a well executed drag flick from the opponents meant that they could indeed increase their lead to 4 goals to 1. Reivers had plenty good spells of passing but were denied any further goals by the strong defence and outstanding goalkeeping.

Glasgow added another goal to their tally making the final score of the match 5-1 in favour of Glasgow University.

Five star performance from Reivers 2s

Kelso Ladies 1s 0

Fjordhus Reivers Ladies 2s 5

THE Reivers Ladies 2s picked up exactly where they left last week, with another fine all round performance away to Kelso 1s.

The home side, who caused the Reivers no end of problems during their meeting at Tweedbank back in September, ultimately had no answer to a much more confident Reivers side.

After a scrappy start, the game came to life midway through the first half, when skipper Ashley Robson neatly tucked the ball into the corner of the Kelso net following a good build up down the right flank. Thereafter, the Reivers settled into their stride and set siege with Sara Robson to the fore working tirelessly upfront, as the visitors peppering the goal in open play. However a well organised Kelso defence and excellent goalkeeping managed to keep the away side at bay until half time.

However, the Reivers ladies cut loose in the second period, scoring a further four goals without reply. The first of the half came from a great solo run by Laura McLean, who fed Chloe Richardson in the D, and the youngster made no mistake with a tidy finish.

Soon after, McLean who was working hard down the left, exploded into the D, saw the shot, and calmly struck the backboard, 3-0 Reivers.

The fourth came from captain Ash Robson, who was having a fine game, when she clinically drove the ball home from a neatly worked penalty corner.

The Tweedbank outfit were now in full flow and from another sweeping move, the ball was worked from the right to captain Ash Robson, who saw Lauren Grant open at top D. She fed the pass and the midfielder struck home to put the game beyond doubt.

This was a great all round team performance by the Reivers, old heads mixed with exciting young talent, made for too many good performances to note individually. However, young Reivers debutants Holly Shepard and Hannah Miller deserve special mention as they grew into the game and equipped themselves very well, showing excellent composure on the ball.

Fjordhus 5s stay on top

Cala Edinburgh 5s 0

Fjordhus Reivers 5s 5

A HUGELY entertaining match was played on a bitterly cold afternoon at Meggetland Sports Arena, in Edinburgh.

Fjordhus Reivers 5s got off to a shaky start but ended up with a 4-0 win against Cala Edinburgh 5s.

Player coach Janet Jack received a well-placed ball from Molly Turnbull and powered in Reivers' first goal during the opening quarter hour of the game.

The Reivers however were not producing their usual slick passes and positioning but great defending by Lily Towers, Meghan Campbell and Beth Logan prevented any infiltration through the Reivers defences.

The Borders team were given a stern but inspirational team talk by player coach Janet Jack at half time to get them back on track.

This completely turned the game around and Reivers came out producing great teamwork and passes dominating the second half.

Soon into the second half, brilliant passing between Lara Towers, Blyth Duff and Molly Turnbull set up a powerful finish for striker Tia Douglas. Shortly afterwards Meghan Campbell performed an impressive solo run down the right hand side of the pitch and powered in Reivers third goal of the match.

Blyth Duff had been receiving great balls from the right and pulled out a precision pass to Tia Douglas who scored her second goal of the match.

It was a great outcome for Fjordhus Reivers 5s who maintain their place at the top of the league tables.

Huge congratulations to Holly Shepherd and Hannah Miller who have moved up to the 2s - you will be missed immensely but the team wish you both the best of luck with Fjordhus Reivers 2s.
