WALKING footballers in Galashiels blew out the candles this week as they celebrated their second birthday.

Numbers have increased gradually since the Gala Fairydean Rovers Walking Football team was formed in February, 2015.

But they are still opening the door to anyone who fancies a kick about each week.

Chairman John Hislop told the Border Telegraph: “Walking football has really taken off in the Borders in the last two years.

"We stared with only few players and now regularly have up to 18 attending our sessions.

"The health benefits are enormous. Physical exercise can reduce your risk of major illnesses, such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, type two diabetes.

"Exercise is also a key factor in promoting mental well-being and can reduce the risk of stress, depression, dementia and Alzheimers."

Last year Gala Fairydean Rovers won their home walking tournament, beating Midlothian on penalties at Netherdale.

And they also finished runners up at the Stenhousemuir Festival.

Last May, eight of the players travelled to Portugal and took part in a European tournament where they were unlucky to lose on penalties in the semi-final after winning their first four games without conceding a goal.

As well as enjoying competitions, the weekly training sessions are also proving beneficial for players.

John added: “Walking football provides a better social life and helps to alleviate any feelings of loneliness and isolation.

"Whatever your age there are many benefits to staying fit and healthy, and playing walking football can help you, build strength, improve muscles, increase your core stability, lose weight, improve your balance and improve your social life.”

Sessions are held at Langlee Community Centre on Mondays and Thursdays between 2.30 and 4pm and Wednesday’s at 6pm at Galashiels Academy.
