GALA Tempest whirled to their fourth consecutive victory in the Border Adult Netball League on Sunday as the Division 2 fixtures prepare to reach an exciting climax next weekend.

The local team beat the Tweeddale Tigers 42-14 at Peebles High School to make them joint division leaders with Storm – the two teams face each other in the last fixture next Sunday which will see the victors crowned Division 2 champions.

Tempest played for the first time in new netball dresses sponsored by local business Tempest Brewery at Sunday’s match. Tempest and the Tigers struggled to find the net in the first few minutes of the first quarter, however, the Gala shooters opened the scoring and then continued with a flurry of goals to pull 11 ahead.

The Tigers remained goal-less for most of the quarter until finally finding the net with the scoreline finishing 11-1.

The second quarter saw a similar pattern of play as Tempest netted a further 11 goals while the Tigers clawed backed only one to finish the quarter 22-2. In the third quarter, the Tigers showed their teeth as they pounced on Tempest’s advantage in a more evenly-matched section of play. The Tiger’s shooters hit the target to score seven goals to Tempest’s eight with the quarter finishing 32-10.

The final quarter saw Tempest whirl into action to clinch a convincing victory, scoring a further 10 goals to the Tiger’s four, the scoreline ending 42-14 to Tempest.

Tempest’s GS/GA, Galashiels Academy pupil Sophie Birtwistle, received her first ‘Fair Play’ nomination of the season from the Tigers following some superb shooting.

In the last divisional matches next week, Tweeddale Tigers will face the Pumas while Linton Reivers play Earlston.

Storm and Gala Tempest will fight it out to decide who will become Division 2 winners.
