Semi-final

Borders 17-18 Glasgow

BORDERS U17s, comprising eight Peebles Netball players and one player from Earlston Netball, took to the court for the last time at the weekend in Dundee, for the national inter-district championships.

The event drew together the best players across Scotland, and Borders faced a huge challenge with injury and illness amongst the squad and a tough pool draw.

However, the tough get going in these circumstances, and this was certainly the case on Saturday, with Borders, after an initial defeat against South Lanarkshire, running out strong victors in their next three matches, and earning a place in the semi-finals.

With their performance at an outstanding level, Borders were confident that they could take on the best Glasgow could produce, and so it seemed, with a skilful performance seeing them leading at half time by 10 goals to 9.

A nerve-wracking second half ensued, with goals going with centre passes. In the closing seconds, and at all square and Borders about to shoot, the umpire called a foul against Borders, upon which Glasgow capitalised, to sink a winning goal just before the whistle.

A disappointing end to a fantastic performance from Borders, with Glasgow going on to win the overall championship against Edinburgh in the final.

The match marked the swan song for the captain, Bryony Patterson and teammates Kazya Stevens, Eilidh Cannon and Sophie Peterson, who move out of the U17 age group for next season.

Borders U17s: Bryony Patterson (Capt) (GD/WD), Eilidh Cannon (GS), Rianna Sterricks (GA), Lucy Gray (WA), Kazya Stevens C/WA), Sophie Peterson (C), Hannah MaGowan (WD), Sophie Walpole (GD/GK), Jess Wodehouse (GK).
