A RETIRED dentist from Darnick has become world champion at orienteering.
Robin Sloan took gold in the Over 70s section at the World Masters Orienteering Championships over the weekend in New Zealand.
The Roxburgh Reiver saw off the challenge from a strong field in the Woodhill Forest, just outside Auckland, including fellow Brit David May.
The courses was described as technically challenging, in the intricately contoured sand-dune type forest, which also featured some areas of low visibility amongst the pampas grass and native bush.
But the Melrose Parish Church elder, who is chairman of Roxburgh Reivers orienteering club, was too quick for his challengers.
Around 90 British athletes took part in the championships.
As well as Robin's gold medal, David May took silver in the same race, and Nick Barrable won silver in the M40s category.
