SINCE announcing plans to create a hall of fame, Gala Fairydean Rovers have been inundated with nominations.

But a search is on to track down any surviving members of the club's two greatest teams.

A ceremony to recognise the great local players, managers, volunteers and officials who have made significant contributions to the game of football in Galashiels and beyond will take place at the Volunteer Hall on Friday, June 2.

Although a list of inductees will be announced on the night, the club is seeking help from fans and friends in identifying any surviving members of two of the most successful football squads in the history of the sport in the town.

The record breaking Gala Rovers squad from 1953/54 season won the Border Amateur League without losing a game and also picked up the Beveridge Cup, the South Cup and the Border Medal competition scoring an incredible 186 goals along the way.

Stalwarts of the team included Rovers legends such as Jimmy Tyson, Ronnie Renton and Wullie Stanners.

The Gala Fairydean side of the 1961/62 season won an unprecedented four trophies under the management of former Hearts legend Alfie Conn.

The Netherdale club lifted the East of Scotland League Championship, the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup, the City Cup and for the first time in the club’s history the Scottish Qualifying Cup.

The team included goalkeeper Davie Walker, signed just one year after winning the Scottish Cup with St Mirren, centre half Willie McPharland, who joined from Hibs, along with local favourites such as Johnny Lyall.

Event organiser and club secretary Graeme McIver told us: "We are grateful to the Galashiels public for their help and engagement in the nominations process for the awards ceremony and we have now decided on the final list of inductees.

"Whilst the announcement of the majority of the awards will be made on the evening, we are looking for help in identifying any surviving members from the record breaking Rovers side of 1953/54 and the great Fairydean team from 1961/62.

"We would like to issue an open invitation to any of the players from those sides to attend as our guests on the evening.

"People can contact us either through our social media channels or by contacting me directly.”

Along with the inductees the club will be presenting Player of the Year Awards to its Lowland League first team, Walking Football Team, Disability Squad and the newly established Ladies Team.

Tickets for the event, priced at only £5 and include food and a disco, and can be purchased from the club or by contacting Mr McIver on 07738 615 562 or graememciver@btinternet.com
