RETIRED jockey Wilson Renwick proved he still has potential in the saddle last week by smashing a long-held Gala Cycling Club record.

The 37-year-old maintained a speed of almost 30-miles-per-hour on his way to breaking the 10-miles time trial course record.

Renwick, who comes from Hawick, announced his retirement from National Hunt racing in 2015 after suffering multiple injuries in a fall at Market Rasen.

But the talented rider, who won almost 400 races, turned his attentions to cycling last year.

He quickly rose to 'Elite' level - just below full-time professional - with the Italian-based Parentini cycling team.

And last week he powered round the fairly-flat Gala course in a new record time of 20 minutes and 19 seconds - 25 seconds quicker than the previous record.

Wilson admits making the switch between sports wasn't all that difficult.

He said: "The crouch you ride in and spend so much time in is very similar to the position you adopt on a time trial bike.

"The first time i sat on a time trial bike it felt really comfortable."

The 10 miles Gala CC route begins and ends close to Abbotsford with cyclists taking in both the Kingsknowes and Ravenswood roundabouts.

Renwick, who finished 14th in the Tour of Senegal earlier this year, won the race by over a minute.

Members of clubs from around the Borders, including Hawick, Kelso, Peebles and Berwick, competed for the Border Trophy.

Despite Gala's leading competitor Neil Pendrich breaking his own personal best for the distance, he was still 71 seconds adrift of the winner.

Fellow Gala CC member Daryl Tait also set a new best time for 10 miles of 21.55 minutes.
