THE Borders Regional Swimming Committee held their annual Border Championships at the Galashiels Pool last Sunday.
Having had a break from swimming over the summer and only just back into training mode these championships test the swimmers' resolve with a mixture of 100M, 200M and 400M events, with the gruelling 800M & 1500M thrown in for good measure.
It would certainly be fair to say that their summer holidays soon became a distant memory.
Six Gala swimmers completed for the 14 Border Titles available on the day with everyone putting in some fantastic swims over the Sunday afternoon.
Arran Little put in a huge effort in both the 100M and 200M Free and again PBd in the 100M IM.
Archie McDonnell had a PB in the 100M IM as did Finlay Thomson in the 100M IM and 200M Free.
Laura Frizzel and Elsbeth Roper both competed in the daunting 800M Free and 400M IM with both achieving PBs.
And Laura was back in the pool for the 400M Free where she again PBd with a great swim.
Andrew Watt competed in four events and although he didn’t manage to beat his personal best times he finished the afternoon being crowned Under 16 100M Free Champion, Open Champion for the 1500M Free, 400M Free and 400M IM - a truly fantastic effort indeed.
This early haul of trophies and PBs for the Gala swimmers bodes well for the many competitions that lie ahead in the new swimming season. Special thanks to Robyn Methven (Gala head coach) for looking after the swimmers on the day.
