GALASHIELS pool sensation Beth Johnston has swam her way to Australia's Gold Coast.

The teenager has been selected to compete for Scotland at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Beth will join up with other members of the Team Scotland Para Squad over the coming weeks ahead of flying out to Australia.

But she has already written herself into the record books by becoming only the third Gala Amateur Swimming Club member to have represented their country.

Doug Welsh was part of the British team at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics and Alison Turnbull was selected for Scotland to compete in the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff.

Douglas Watt from Gala Amateur Swimming Club told us: "Beth has added her name to the club history books with her selection.

"This is an fantastic achievement and one that Beth, her family and her Gala ASC colleagues and coaches are extremely proud and excited about.

"Beth's selection is reward for all the hard work in training not to mention some outstanding performances over the last two years."

While Beth is preparing for the Commonwealth Games, her Gala ASC team-mates have been racking up the PBs, finals and medals at the East District Age Groups Championships.

Round 1 took place at Glenrothes last month where Laura Frizzel and Maili Brown competed in the gruelling long-distance events (400M IM, 800M & 1500M Free), both putting in some great swims.

It was back to Glenrothes for round two, which was held last week, for five Gala swimmers where they competed in the 200M events.

Anna D’Agrosa, who was making her East District debut, competed in the 200M Breast and 200M Free, reaching the final of the free and finishing 5th.

Elsbeth Roper took on the 200M Free and 200M Breast and had great swims in both.

The same can be said for Maili Brown who swam in the 200M Breast, Free and Back, reaching the final of the Back where she finished 5th.

Laura Frizzel swam in the 200M Free, Breast and Fly, reached the final of the Fly and picked up a silver medal.

And Jake Shepherd, who also making his debut at the East Districts, had a great swim in the 200M Breast.

Douglas added: "With performances like the ones at the East District Championships, who knows, there may be other names re-writing the Gala history books."

The 2018 Commonwealth Games run from April 4 to April 18.
