Gala Fairydean Rovers Amateurs 0

Langlee Amateurs 5

HE has scored hundreds of goals in his career, but Des Sutherland will struggle to match his Sanderson Cup final quartet which ensured Langlee Amateurs had a debut season to remember.

Sutherland was simply brilliant, even setting up the fifth goal as Gala Fairydean Amateurs were blown away by Langlee, who earlier this month claimed the Division C title.

But Sutherland is already looking ahead to next season.

He said: “It is not about me, it is about the team and I thought we thoroughly deserved to win the cup final.

“We defended well when we had to and in the end it was a comfortable victory.

“It has been a great first season, winning the league without losing a game and now winning the Sanderson Cup.

“We are looking forward to Division B now. We will have a similar squad, with a few new additions and maybe some players retiring but we are confident of doing well.”

While Langlee have impressed this season, scoring 111 goals in 20 league games, a young and talented Gala team had also fared well in their first year, just missing out on promotion by a point and making three cup finals.

But after an even first 18 minutes, Langlee proved the stronger side, with Sutherland leading the way.

He slid the ball past Michael Fenton with a composed first goal before a lovely turn and finish made it 2-0 after 22 minutes.

Danny Bolton missed a back post header to make it three and Bob Noble – lining up against his older brother Stevie in the Gala defence – looked to have scored with a cracking finish, only for it to be ruled out for offside.

Gala were also left frustrated that referee Davie McNeill failed to award a penalty for handball against Stuart Harkness, although it was completely accidental by the Langlee defender.

The Fairydean Rovers needed a quick response in the second half to get back into the final. Instead, Langlee went 4-0 up within ten minutes of the restart.

The third goal was the pick of the bunch as Sutherland turned and whipped in a stunning 25 yard strike for his hat-trick, before the ex-Selkirk striker set up Danny Bolton to score the fourth.

The game petered out with the result obvious to all, with Fenton making a good stop to deny Langlee substitute Gary Cleghorn.

But it was fittingly Sutherland who had the last word, producing a fantastic header with five minutes to go.
