IT is often said, ‘You only get out what you put in’.

This is certainly true when it comes to the Fjordhus Reivers 5ths during 2017-18.

Back in September 2017 a gaggle of 14 year old girls took their first tentative steps in to the unfamiliar territory of ladies hockey-no one could predict what lay ahead but the one thing coach, Janet Jack, knew she had in this group was enthusiasm and a desire to better themselves.

It was clear to those closest to the girls that Jack used the theory of the Growth Mindset for she helped them to believe that their most basic abilities would be developed through hard work and dedication-some talent was the mere starting point.

Her view and leadership, not surprisingly, created a love of learning and a resilience that was essential for accomplishment. The group, from across the Borders, have been seen together, training in their own spare time and just as importantly, socialising ;friendships for life have been formed in the 5ths and the development over nine months has been impressive by any standards.

Having played 10 other teams in East District Division 3, the 5ths won 16 out of 19 matches, drew 2 and lost only 1 with 82 goals for and only 14 against. To their delight, the 5ths topped the Division but would admit it has not always been easy and there have been challenges along the way-the girls have played in blazing sunshine, torrential rain and sleet, they have learnt to deal with aggressive opposition and interesting decisions by umpires-all part of player development, and resilience was certainly required. Team manager, Susan Lawrence, was incredibly efficient and ensured everyone was where they should be and at the right time! To celebrate the season, players, coaches and parents, will get together for a barbeque in June-you do indeed,’ Get out what you put in.’-A happy, thriving club.

Older (just), Wiser (possibly!) but definitely more experienced, Fjordhus Reivers 4ths also enjoyed a very successful season. Coached by Janet Jack and managed by Michael Ferguson, there was no doubt their focus was on improvement and winning but there was genuine camaraderie in the ranks too…and always a treat in the form of home baking to celebrate the end of the match, be that victory or defeat; the girls were focussed on their hockey but there was that vital ingredient of fun interwoven through this.

Due to their position as 2nd in East District Division 3 league, the 4ths move up a division next season.
