Persistent rain and a few late call-offs didn't take the shine of a memorable match on Sunday as Selkirk's oldies surprised a few of football's greats of yesteryear.

Captained by former Scotland star Colin Hendry, Manchester City's legends required a handful of locals to make up the numbers.

But with the likes of former England winger Peter Barnes and Sunderland skipper Gary Bennet in their ranks there was still plenty of optimism from the travelling fans.

In keeping with the Bobby Johnstone links, Selkirk Legends, which included the likes of Paul Brownlee, Alan Kerr and Fraser Leckie, also featured several former Hibernian stars such as Mickey Weir, Darren Dods and Gordon Hunter.

In an entertaining opening half both teams created plenty of chances.

And it was the hosts who took the lead after only six minutes with David Knox running onto Derek Whitehead's through ball to fire into the far bottom corner.

Whitehead and Gary Purves both went close to stretching the lead.

But at the other end John Dodds produced several outstanding stops to prevent City drawing level.

A surging run from Weir led to Selkirk's second just before the half hour.

The 52-year-old linked up well with Craig Lowrie before his shot was blocked in front of goal, and Whitehead followed up to drill the ball home.

City forced a number of corners as half time approached with Hendry showing he hasn't lost his aerial threat with some testing headers for Dodds to deal with.

Although the pace slowed in the second half the football was still good with Barnes rolling back the clock to showboat in midfield.

But it was Selkirk who thought they'd added to their tally just four minutes after the interval as Knox curled a shot in off the post only to be denied by the offside flag.

The third goal arrived just eight minutes later after Purves's powerful drive was parried by Jaydee Sharkey and Knox pounced to score from the angle.

Despite some valiant defending from both Darren Dods and Gordon Hunter, John Dodds had to produce a couple of excellent saves to deny promising 21-year-old Corey Molloy and City marketing manager Alex Leigh.

With the game opening up in the final quarter Brownlee, Weir and Paul McCulloch all went close with shots as Kerr and Craig Douglas enjoyed space down the flanks.

And a fourth goal did arrive with eight minutes remaining as Lowrie produced a neat finish to wrong foot Sharkey.

Selkirk Legends manager Gordon Rae said: "That was as enjoyable a game of football as I've seen in a while with both teams playing some really nice stuff.

"There was a fair amount of talent on show with the big names from Manchester City and Hibs, but you have to give credit to the Selkirk players who really put in a shift and secured the win."
