MANCHESTER City Life President Bernard Halford was made an Honorary Member of Selkirk on Sunday.

The 76-year-old, who served for 39 years as secretary at Maine Road and Eastlands, was a close friend of the late Bobby Johnstone.

And it was Johnstone's Selkirk roots that first brought the father of four north of the border more than a decade ago with a Manchester City academy team.

And he has continued to support the Yarrow Park club by organising friendlies between the teams and talking at dinners.

Despite recent ill health Bernard returned to Selkirk at the weekend with a team of Manchester City Legends, including Peter Barnes, Colin Hendry and Gary Bennet.

Following the final whistle, Selkirk chairman Jaydee Sharkey made the presentation.

He said: "As I'm new in my role I'm only getting to know the history of my club and a name that has kept coming up in recent history is Bernard Halford.

"Ever since we moved to Yarrow Park Bernard has been bringing Manchester City teams up to Selkirk and has helped continue a close friendship between the two clubs, which was all started by his great friend Bobby Johnstone.

"It is with great pride that I present this Honorary Membership of Selkirk Football Club to Bernard."

Bobby Johnstone arrived at Manchester City in 1955 and quickly became a fans' favourite.

The Scottish international made a total of 124 appearances for Citizens - scoring 42 goals - and became the first player to net in consecutive FA Cup finals.

During his five seasons at Maine Road, Bobby also became firm friends with Bernard Halford.

In 2010 Bernard was made Life President of Manchester City.

And he remains the only non-player to be inducted into the club's Hall of Fame.

On accepting his Honorary Membership of Selkirk, Bernard said: "I enjoy coming up to Selkirk so much and wish I could come a lot more.

"Every time I come to Selkirk everyone knows me and I treasure that.

"Bobby meant a lot to me and it is great to be in this clubroom surrounded by so many mementos of Bobby.

"I am so glad we have continued this relationship between the clubs and I am deeply honoured to become an Honorary Member."
