OFFICIALS at Selkirk are hopeful of reviving their fortunes despite almost going out of business last week.

The 138-year-old Yarrow Park club, which finished fifth in last season’s Lowland League, have started the season with only a handful of signed players as well as carrying considerable debt.

And recently-appointed chairman Jaydee Sharkey was forced to request a postponement of Saturday’s Lowland League match against Edusport Academy.

But the problems, which have only surfaced since last month’s AGM, are now being addressed with a new-look committee being buoyed by support from across the footballing community.

Jaydee told us: “I don’t think anyone realised the scale of problems we faced.

“Last week, the easiest thing for all of us would have been to just lock the doors and pull out of the league.

“But this club has a lot of history and, despite what has gone on before, is still well-liked and well-supported.

“People have come forward with offers of sponsorship and a few clubs have also offered to help us out with the loan of players.”

Hibernian legend Gordon Rae, who answered an SOS to become temporary manager, has also been working tirelessly to attract enough players to fulfill tonight's (Wednesday) fixture with Civil Service Strollers.

Selkirk currently have six players signed with two others awaiting international clearance.

They also have a goalkeeper on loan from Devronvale and two or three players being lined up on loan deals from other clubs.

An open training session on Monday led to several more players being offered contracts.

It is understood that a deal with another Lowland League club is also being hatched for more players to arrive by the end of the month.

Jaydee added: “We are confident that we will be able to fulfill the rest of our fixtures and we are grateful to the understanding and support we’ve received from the Lowland League.

“I would urge anyone with any interest in Selkirk Football Club to come down and support us any way they can.

"We can save Selkirk Football Club but we need everyone to get behind us."

Following Monday night’s Lowland League meeting the Yarrow Park club were given an ultimatum to provide assurances for fulfilling forthcoming fixtures.

The club is holding two other open training sessions next week - on Tuesday and Thursday - at Yarrow Park to allow any interested players to meet with manager Rae.

Tonight’s match at Yarrow Park against Civil Service Strollers kicks off at 7.15pm.
