Council honours Borders athletes

SCOTTISH Borders Council has honoured local athletes who took part in this year"s Olympic and Paralympic Games in Beijing.

Olympic swimmer from Duns, Euan Dale, was honoured alongside Paralympians Kate Murray, archer, from Bonchester Bridge; Graeme Paterson, footballer, from Duns and Libby Clegg, silver medallist sprinter from Newcastleton.

Also honoured was local equestrian rider, Caroline Powell, from Kelso who represented New Zealand at this year"s games.

Convener of the Council, Councillor Alasdair Hutton hosted the event alongside Executive Member for sport, culture and community learning, Councillor Graham Garvie.

Joining in the celebrations were local athletes supported by the Council"s athlete support programme.

Councillor Garvie said: 'We are very proud of our athletes here in the Borders who have gone on to compete at the highest level possible. Their dedication and hard work is admirable and they are great role models for our upcoming athletes who are hoping to compete at future Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games.'

Councillor Hutton added: 'It"s a marvellous achievement for these athletes to have been chosen to represent their country at the Olympics and Paralympics. These athletes have made the Borders proud. They are an inspiration to everyone around them.'

The athletes received specially designed and engraved glassware from the Council in recognition of their achievements.
