THIS year’s Hastings Borders Marathon Event promises to be bigger and better thanks to the backing of a new local sponsor Hastings Solicitors and Estate Agents based in Kelso and Selkirk.

Now in its third year, and the only marathon held in the Scottish Borders, it takes place at Kelso Racecourse and Golf Course on Sunday 6 March (2016).

New for 2016 is a half marathon and a 10km race which means the event now caters for a wider range of running abilities and interests says organiser Chris Renton.

An accomplished distance runner from Melrose, Chris said: “I am very pleased to announce Hastings Solicitors and Estate Agents as the headline sponsor. Owner Ron Hastings is quick to support local initiatives, particularly those that are about keeping fit and healthy. I am delighted that four members of his team have already signed up to run the new 10k.

“Critically, Hastings sponsorship means that all entry fee monies will directly help vulnerable youngsters in difficulty, through a charity I am fundraising for, Brathay Trust. They work with some of the most vulnerable youngsters who, having grown up in difficult circumstances, have little or no hope of a good future. For one young man that meant Brathay supported him to find his own place, attend college and start a part-time job.

“My thanks also go to the owners of the Kelso Racecourse and Golf Club and their members."

With numbers limited to 50 runners per event, Chris is expecting places to go quickly. The increasingly popular sporting fixture has attracted runners from as far away as London as well as those from local clubs including Jedburgh, Kelso, Teviotdale Harriers in Hawick, Gala Harriers and Borders Triathletes.

All runners will receive a Hastings sponsored quality technical t-shirt, a race memento and goody bag. For more details, log on to the following website: www.melroseraces.com
