VETERAN athlete Ron Sutherland took a leaf out of Robert the Bruce's book to finally break the tap eat the weekend.

The 72-year-old sports management consultant, who recently moved from Innerleithen to Galashiels, has been competing on both the Border and Highland games circuits for well over a decade.

Despite regular defeats he has continued to try and try again.

After finishing runners-up in the final of the 200 metres a week earlier at Crieff Highland Games, the former school governor pulled on his spikes again at the weekend to taste success.

Leading all the way from the gun, Ron held on strongly to claim first in the 200 metres final at Birnam Highland Games.
