Jed Legion 2

Gordon 3

GORDON captain Kevin Utterson already has his eyes set on the Division A title after lifting the Border Cup for the first time in the club’s history.

Utterson bagged two goals to put the villagers ahead at the break but a thrilling second half saw Jed Legion level the final before Gordon player/manager Craig Livingstone scrambled home a late winner.

Gordon’s rise through the Border Amateur League since returning to the association in 2012 has now seen them lift five trophies but Utterson has his eyes on the top prize.

The former Scotland rugby internationalist said: “Our main aim for the season is to win Division A.

“We knew if we could win today it would kickstart our season and hopefully we can now claim the big one.

“It was a really tough game and credit to Jed Legion, they probably were the better side but we took our chances.

“Playing football has given me a new lease of life and we have a good set of guys at the club who are prepared to work hard.”

A clash of the top two teams in Division A, neither of whom had won the Border Cup, meant this always going to be a frantic and tight cup final.

But it was a poor show in the first half, as both sides looked to go aerial in the early stages. Gordon’s Graeme Gillie forced a save from Sean Jack inside two minutes but aside from that there were no chances created until Utterson’s first goal on 26 minutes.

Livingstone beat his marker down the left before setting up Jamie Milner whose cross gave Utterson the easiest chance to put Gordon ahead.

And an overhead kick from close range saw Utterson make it 2-0 at the break.

But the introduction of Stuart Spence for Jed six minutes into the second half changed the direction of this game as the midfielder was a constant threat to Gordon.

Nathan Gillie pulled a goal back with a fierce free kick past ex-Gala Fairydean stopper Elliot Turnbull on 54 minutes.

Turnbull made an outstanding save to deny Sean Clarke but the former Hawick Legion Rovers top scorer finally found the net on 63 minutes with a deflected shot to send Jed into wild celebrations.

Yet, Gordon’s winning habit is hard to lose and Livingstone toe poked the ball past Jack to put his men ahead again.

Jed refused to give up and Chris Gillon’s header was saved by Turnbull, before the striker was sent off in the final minutes for pushing Greig Porter.

There was one last chance for Legion but ex-Kelso United midfielder Jamie Swailes fired over after Turnbull had made a rare mistake and dropped a cross.
