Gala Fairydean Rovers 0 Edinburgh University 5

AS Halloween horror shows go, Gala Fairydean Rovers produced the goods at the 3G Arena on Saturday.

Visitors Edinburgh University belied their lowly league position with a comprehensive victory against the out-of-sorts Braw Lads.

There was little to choose between the teams in the first half with Dean McColm forcing a tremendous one handed save from the University keeper in the 11th minute.

But 60 seconds later Joe Aitken capitalised on slack defending to give the students the lead.

On the stroke of half time Gala almost got back on level terms but skipper Jamie Gibson saw his volley come back off the post.

However the second half will go down as one of the poorest home displays for a long time.

Peter Mair popped up in the 53rd minute to finish off a slick move by firing the ball past the stranded Mark Wilson.

After that University were content to sit back and pick off Gala at will as the home side struggled to break them down.

The gaps kept appearing with Jack Guthrie making three with 20 minutes remaining.

Guthrie added to his tally as the home defence were pulled apart again in the closing stages.

And Andrew Finlay compounded a miserable day for the Fairydean Rovers by slamming home a fifth in injury time.

Fairydean Rovers manager Steven Noble said: "We didn't do too badly in the first half and I thought we were well on top for most of it.

"When we lost the second goal we started to fall apart which is really disappointing - we are are better than that.

"We were punished for our mistakes but I am confident we will bounce back."

*A minute's silence was observed before the game in memory of former goalkeeper and manager Frank Duncan who passed away last week.

He played four seasons for Gala Fairydean from 1963-64 until 1966-67.

During that time he missed only three matches and played 140 games for Gala Fairydean of which only one was a friendly and that was played against East Fife to mark the opening of the stand. He also scored a goal from the penalty spot against Edinburgh City Police in 1965-66.

While playing for Gala Fairydean he won three East of Scotland League championships, two Scottish Qualifying cups, two King Cups and one East of Scotland Qualifying cup.

Frank went onto manage Gala Fairydean and signed club stalwarts Davie Watkins and Jim Gray.
