GARRY O'Connor was appointed manager of Selkirk on Saturday - despite suffering a 5-1 defeat in his first match as caretaker.

The 33-year-old from East Lothian was put in temporary charge last Wednesday following the shock sacking of Steve Forrest.

O'Connor, who won 16 caps for Scotland, agreed terms with the Selkirk committee on Saturday evening to become the club's third Lowland League manager.

Amongst Garry's first appointments was former Gala Fairydean Rovers coach Joe Brown as his assistant.

Current Preston Athletic keeper Scott Dowie is set to return to the club as a coach.

And it is expected that two or three new players will sign before Saturday's game with Stirling University.

Garry told the Border Telegraph: "Everything is a bit new to me but I am enjoying the challenge.

"I have a strong backing from the board at Selkirk and it is a great opportunity for me to take my first steps into management."

O'Connor spent much of his first days in charge on the phone to former team-mates and managers in a bid to lure senior players to Yarrow Park.

Garry continued: "I spoke with Mixu (Paatelainen) and one or two other managers about getting players on loan. I have the contacts so I may as well use them.

"We have a good bunch of players already at Selkirk but I do need to add to the squad as soon as possible. I have four or five who will miss the Stirling game and I need to bring boys in quickly.

"There's no point in bringing in players for the sake of it - the boys who come here will be good enough for the Lowland League, if not better."

Although O'Connor's former Hibernian strike partner Derek Riordin had been a target, it is unlikely the former Scotland player will head to Yarrow Park this month.

O'Conner added: "I will keep pestering Derek but he is hoping to get a full time contract in the transfer window. He's training with Hibs - and by all accounts he's flying.

"He knows there's an opportunity for him at Selkirk... you just never know."
