FOOTBALL yet again proved to be the winner on Sunday at Netherdale.

The annual Live Borders Festival of Football was already the largest one day event of its kind in Europe.

And this year it got even bigger with 132 teams from all across the Borders taking part.

Youngsters aged from five up to 12 competed for glory and for fun on the couple of dozen or so mini pitches set up across the vast playing fields.

Drew Kelly from Live Borders told us: "Every year it just gets bigger and bigger - we are absolutely delighted with the turn out.

"What is especially pleasing is that for the first time we have 14 girls only teams taking part.

"I would personally like to thank everyone who helps make the Festival of Football possible and also to our main sponsors, NFU Mutual."

Teams from Ancrum, Chirnside, Coldstream, Duns, Earlston, Eyemouth, Gala Fairydean Rovers, Hawick YM, Kelso, Leithen Vale, Linton Hotspur, Melrose, Peebles, Selkirk, Tweedbank Thistle and Lauderdale were joined by guest club Wickham from Northumberland during the afternoon's tournaments.

The Live Borders Festival of Football began as a memorial five-a-side tournament on the small Clovenfords pitch in 1991.

Wilma and Kenneth Gunn from Selkirk helped organise the Cameron Gunn Memorial Tournament in remembrance of their son who died from a heart condition while playing the sport he loved.

They also formed the charity Scottish HART to help detect the same condition in other youngsters and prevent further deaths.

As well as lobbying for a national screening service being made available at Hampden Park in Glasgow, Scottish HART has also supplied dozens of life-saving defibrillators to sports grounds and community buildings.

Wilma Gunn said: "It is amazing how the tournament has grown from that first day in 1991 near Clovenfords when a few of Cameron's friends played.

"We are delighted to continue working to detect cardiovascular problems in youngsters through the screening programme. If any parent or coach out there wants a child screened we can refer them to Hampden, all they have to do is get in touch."

The Cameron Gunn Cup is played for by the finalists of the Scottish Borders Junior FA senior section on the main 3G pitch.

And it proved to be a thrilling final with Eugene Stokes scoring an extra-time winner for Duns to beat Hawick.

The Under 14s final between Kelso and Melrose for the Bruce Scott Cup may not have been quite so close but it did produce some tremendous goals.

Cameron Thompson scored a hat-trick with Brad Adams also grabbing a brace as Kelso ran out 6-2 winners.

It was Hawick who lifted the Jack Gilchrist Cup after a pulsating 2-1 victory over Earlston Rhymers.

Dean Hunter and Dylan Ellis were Hawick's goal heroes.
