FRED Blackie has seen his fair share of good goals – but the experienced coach declared Gala Hotspur’s third in a 10-0 rout of Duns Amateurs as the best he has seen in amateur football.

Veteran midfielder Craig Lowrie notched a hat-trick, Michael Blackwood also scored a treble, with Fraser Brown, Stewart Robertson, Damien Marcinzak and an own goal completing the hammering at New Hawthorn Park to send Spurs to the top of Division B.

Blackie said: “We played some lovely football especially in the first half.

“The third goal by Craig Lowrie was one of the best team goals I have seen in amateur football.

“The pleasing aspect is that we have a good squad and bringing players off the bench does not diminish our team in any way.

“The fact we have lost one goal in three games is also a huge plus but we are not getting carried away with our good start to the season.”

Tweedmouth Amateurs joined Spurs at the top of the table with a 6-0 hammering of Earlston Rhymers.

Tweedmouth’s Aaron Hope scored two in the win which leaves Earlston second bottom.

Hawick Legion got their first points of the season with a 5-1 victory at Leithen Rovers, with Scott Duncan scoring two, Andrew Oldham, Rory Scott and Thomas Scott also on the scoresheet.

Brian Mattison is the on-form striker of Division B, as he notched his second hat-trick in two games as Langholm Legion thumped Lauder 6-2, while Biggar United beat St Boswells and Linton Hotspur and Kelso Thistle drew.

In Division C, Ancrum have put aside last season’s struggles to go top with a 5-1 over Selkirk Victoria, with Jordan Nuttall scoring a treble.

Des Sutherland netted four goals in a 6-0 win for Division C favourites Langlee Amateurs over Tweeddale Rovers Colts, making it seven goals in two games for the ex-Gala Fairydean Rovers, Selkirk and Coldstream forward.

William ‘Bongo’ Mercer grabbed three goals in a goalfest at Netherdale, with Melrose winning 6-5 over Highfields United.

Matty Linton and Ian Turnbull ensured Hawick Legion Rovers took all three points home from Gala Thistle, and Berwick Colts beat Kelso Amateurs for their first win of the season.
