Cumbernauld Colts 2

Vale of Leithen 3

A REMARKABLE second-half fightback saw Vale of Leithen reach the semi-finals of the South of Scotland Challenge Cup.

Chris Anderson's team appeared to be crashing out of the multi-league competition at Broadwood after conceding a second goal just before the interval.

But an amazing three goals in the final 20 minutes - including a 94th minute penalty secured victory for the Victoria Park club.

A delighted Anderson told us: "I felt we were unlucky to be two goals down and the boys knew that.

"We played really well in the second half and I thought if we got a goal back we could go on and win.

"It's been a difficult season for us and the boys deserve a great deal of credit for the way they went about the second half."

Cumbernauld took a deserved lead midway through the first half after Sean Brown headed home Craig Murray's cross.

Murray went from provider to scorer in the 44th minutes to beat Ross Gilpin with a powerful shot.

Trailing 2-0 at the break, Anderson's team somehow picked themselves up and came out fighting after the break.

Despite creating several chances either side of the hour the away side had to wait until the 73rd minute for Brad Raiker to pull a goal back.

Vale continued to press forward and they were rewarded with a Sean Stewart goal with eight minutes remaining on the clock.

Neither side was settling for a draw as chances continued to be created at either end.

But in the 93rd minute Stewart was pulled down inside the area after chasing a long ball over the top.

Tommy Patterson calmly slotted home the spot kick for the memorable victory.
