ROSS McNeil came off the bench to score his 20th goal of the season and take East Kilbride into the second round of the Lowland League Cup.

The 25-year-old substitute's late strike was all that separated Kilby and East Stirlingshire at K Park.

McNieil said: “It was looking more and more like the game would go to extra time but when the chance came I took it.

“We were all disappointed not to win the league last week and we’d like to make amends by lifting the cup.”

East Kilbride will face BSC Glasgow next Saturday in the second round after Stephen Swift’s team hammered Dalbeattie Star 7-1 at Iselcroft Stadium.

Jack Smith netted four with Martin Grehan scoring a brace and Tom Bentham also on target during the rout.

Sean McKirdy and Phil Addison were Selkirk’s scorers as they beat Whitehill Welfare 2-0 at Yarrow Park.

Manager Ian Fergus said: “That was an excellent performance from us and on another day it could have been five or six as we created so many chances.

“We’re happy with our fifth place finish in the table and a wee cup run to end the season would be nice.”

Selkirk will host Edusport Academy after they required penalties to see off Edinburgh University at Peffermill.

Goals from Liam Chambers, David Brown and Craig Heugh helped Gala Fairydean Rovers to a 3-0 win over Hawick Royal Albert to reach the second round.

Steven Noble’s team will now travel to Broadwood on Friday evening to face Cumbernauld Colts following their 6-0 drubbing of Vale of Leithen.

Stephen O’Neill scored twice with Michael Wallace, Sean Brown, Craig Holmes and Paul Nash also on target.

Stirling University required extra time to beat Civil Service Strollers 4-2 and reach a second round tie against Gretna, who received a bye.
