GALA Fairydean Rovers FC are asking for help from the local community in tracking down members of two famous teams from the history of football in the town to invite them to the club’s annual Hall of Fame event.

The Gala Fairydean team of 1965/66 and the Gala Rovers squad of 2000/01 will be inducted into the second annual Hall of Fame Awards.

The club are requesting any members of both squads to contact them in order to receive an invitation to the event.

The 65/66 Fairydean team, managed by former Hearts star Bobby Kirk won the East of Scotland League, losing only one game in the process.

The Netherdale side also won the King Cup, the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup and the Scottish Qualifying Cup in a magnificent season.

A 4-5 loss to Montrose in the Scottish Cup brought to an end the club’s run of 48 games without defeat.

In the 2000/01 season, Ralph Wilson’s Gala Rovers side remained unbeaten throughout the league season, winning all of their 22 games in the Border Amateur A Division, a simply sensational achievement by any standard.

The Volunteer Hall has been hired for the evening of Friday, June 8 for the ceremony which aims to recognise the truly great local players, managers, volunteers and officials who have made significant contributions to the game of football in Galashiels and beyond.

Over 200 people packed out the Volunteer Hall in Galashiels last year to witness the star-studded inaugural event. Former Scottish international stars John Collins and Alfie Conn Junior joined John “Yogi” Hughes, Braw Lad Greg Robertson and dozens of local footballing greats at the sold out event.

Club Secretary Graeme McIver told us: "The club has been busy over the past week in trying to track down as many members of both these squads as possible to ensure that we can invite them to the event.

"We want to recognise and honour the fantastic achievements of both these great teams from the history of Gala Fairydean and Gala Rovers.

"We are confident that through social media we have contacted the vast majority of the Rovers squad but are appealing for help in tracking down any surviving members of the Fairydean squad from 1965/66.

"If anybody has any contact details for these players please pass them onto the club through our website or facebook page. Alternatively I can be contacted on 07738 615 562.”

Along with the latest inductees the club will be presenting Player of the Year Awards to its Lowland League first team, Border Amateur Development Squad, Walking Football Team, Disability Squad and Ladies Team.

Tickets for the event are priced at only £10, including food and a disco and can be purchased from the club.
